“Do you have your cat?” Margaret asked as she got into Savannah’s car late the next afternoon. She looked around inside the car. “Oh, hi, Rags,” she greeted. “Glad to see you’re with us. Yeah,” she said, fastening her seatbelt, “Rags, I doubt we could get very far with this intervention without you.” She asked, “Where’s Iris?”

“She may meet us out there later. Something came up at the inn,” Savannah explained.

“Crap,” Margaret spewed. “Pardon my French, but Iris told me she knew Ethan in school—you know, better than I did. I just knew him in passing. She said he was in her group a couple of times in both science lab and drama. Iris thought he might have a crush on her because every time she’d get involved in a project, here came Ethan to join her group.”

“I thought you said he was older than you and Iris,” Savannah said.

“Yeah, but in high school sometimes they mixed classes in certain subjects to get enough people to warrant having that lab or drama class or whatever. Yeah, I think Iris will be a big help with Ethan. I sure hope she can make it. What’s the holdup?” Margaret asked.

“I don’t know,” Savannah said, “but I think it has to do with cats. She practically hung up on me, but before that I heard her shout to someone something about cats.” She glanced at her aunt as she drove. “Probably the outside cats wanted in, and maybe the inside cats wanted out.”

“Cats, cats, cats,” Margaret grumbled. “Sometimes I feel like they’re overwhelming my life—rolling over me and smothering me.”

Savannah chuckled. “Yeah, I can see that. Why don’t you and Max take a break? Leave the shelter cats to your staff and volunteers and take a luxury vacation someplace. You must have a bucket list. It sounds like it’s time to start crossing things off it. I’ll help out with the cats if I can.”

“Well, that’s generous of you with all you have going on. Sure,” Margaret said, “it sounds really nice. I wonder if I could get Max on board.”

“Well, try. It would do you both a world of good,” Savannah said.

“I think I will,” Margaret said. “Thank you for the idea. Even if it never happens, I’ll have a blast fantasizing about it.” She grabbed for her phone when it chimed, looked at it, and said, “It’s Iris. Hi,” she said into the phone. “Where are you?”

“Well?” Savannah questioned when Margaret ended the call.

“She’s on her way. We’re almost there. Shall we go in and break the ice,” Margaret asked, “or wait for Iris?”

“Might as well go in,” Savannah said. She parked her car, removed Rags from the backseat, and walked with him and Margaret toward the house. “Hi, Elliot,” Savannah said when the teen opened the front door to the barn-house. She quickly stepped back when he darted past her, and she stumbled on the bottom step. “Hey,” she called, “where are you going in such a hurry?”

“My sister needs help,” he said, continuing to run.
